Florida RV & Recreational · The Short Version

One agency for every toy in the Florida garage.

Florida is a year-round recreational state — RVs that never winterize, motorcycles ridden twelve months a year, and golf carts that outnumber cars in entire communities. Core 4 writes all of it.

Florida RV and recreational vehicle insurance is not a one-size-fits-all market. A Class A motorhome, a fifth wheel, a Harley Road King, a Can-Am Spyder, a pair of Polaris Ranger UTVs, and a gas-powered golf cart are six different risks — written by six different carriers, each with their own underwriting rules, deductible structures, and specialty endorsements. Core 4 is appointed with the full roster of 120+ Florida carriers that write recreational vehicles: Progressive (the broad-market leader), GEICO, Dairyland, Foremost, Markel, Nationwide, Good Sam, National General, and Hagerty for anything classic or collectible.

That breadth matters here more than in most lines. Florida recreational vehicles often sit idle through hurricane season, travel to out-of-state trails and rallies, and come in non-standard configurations that trip up single-brand quoters (a Mercedes Sprinter camper conversion, a horse trailer with living quarters, a vintage Airstream being renovated, a racing-prepped motocross bike). Shopping every appointed carrier at once is the difference between a policy that covers the vehicle properly and one that leaves a gap where it matters most.

The other Florida-specific wrinkle is full-timer coverage. Florida is a favored domicile for the RV-as-primary-residence crowd — no state income tax, mild winters, and permissive RV-park and dry-camping laws. A full-timer policy combines RV coverage with homeowners-like coverages (personal property, liability at the site, loss of use), and getting classified incorrectly can mean a denied claim. Core 4 asks about use pattern on every RV quote and writes the right form.

Florida RV & Motorcycle Legal Requirements

What Florida law actually requires — by vehicle type.

Florida's rules for recreational vehicles are genuinely confusing. Motorhomes work like cars. Towables ride on the tow vehicle's policy. Motorcycles are wild. ATVs depend on where you ride. Here's the honest breakdown.

Required
Class A/B/C

Motorized RVs

Registered vehicles in Florida — must carry state minimum PIP ($10k) and PDL ($10k) like any Florida car. Financed motorhomes also require comprehensive and collision per the lender.

Coverage Flows
Tow Vehicle

Travel Trailers & 5th Wheels

Not self-propelled — no separate liability required. Auto policy's liability extends while towing. Physical damage to the trailer itself needs a dedicated travel trailer policy.

Unique FL Rule
Financial Resp.

Motorcycles

Florida does NOT require motorcycle insurance to ride. But an at-fault Florida rider must prove financial responsibility after a crash or lose their license. Financed bikes require full coverage.

Depends on Use
ATV / UTV

ATVs & Side-by-Sides

Not required for private-property use. Required for public roads (where permitted) and most commercial trail systems. Homeowners usually excludes off-premises ATV damage.

Optional
Golf Cart

Golf Carts

No state requirement for private-community or course use. Low-speed vehicles (25+ mph electric) operating on public roads require registration and insurance like a moped.

Strongly Recd
Full-Timer

Full-Time RV Living

Anyone living in their RV 6+ months per year needs a full-timer policy — standard RV coverage explicitly excludes use as a primary residence. Missing this classification means denied claims.

The Florida motorcycle insurance situation, explained

Florida is genuinely unusual on motorcycles. Unlike nearly every other state, Florida does not require motorcycle riders to carry insurance to operate the bike legally. A rider with a valid Florida license and motorcycle endorsement can buy a bike, register it, and ride it off the lot with zero insurance in place — provided the bike is owned free and clear (financed bikes always require coverage per the lender). This is a source of widespread confusion, and plenty of Florida riders take it to mean they don't need insurance at all.

They do. Florida's financial responsibility law kicks in the moment a rider causes an accident. An uninsured at-fault rider must post bodily injury liability ($10,000 per person / $20,000 per accident) and property damage liability ($10,000) coverage after the fact — often through an SR-22 certificate — or have their license and registration suspended. Doing that after a crash is dramatically more expensive than carrying the coverage ahead of time. A Florida motorcycle liability policy typically runs $180 to $500 a year. Paying that is always cheaper than the alternative.

The other wrinkle: motorcycles are excluded from Florida's PIP (Personal Injury Protection) system. A motorcyclist injured in a Florida crash cannot use PIP for medical bills — PIP covers car drivers, not bike riders. Riders should either carry health insurance with low out-of-pocket limits or add Medical Payments coverage to the motorcycle policy. Core 4 discusses this on every Florida motorcycle quote.

How to Save on Florida RV & Recreational Insurance

Eight ways Florida RV & recreational vehicle owners lower their premium.

Bundling with auto + home, right-sizing coverage for seasonal use, and picking the right specialty carrier usually stack to 20–35% in savings.

1

Shop 120+ carriers — not just Progressive

Progressive dominates RV and motorcycle marketing but is rarely the cheapest on any specific risk. Core 4 quotes every appointed carrier in one pass.

2

Bundle RV + auto + home + umbrella

Florida multi-policy bundles stack — adding an RV or motorcycle to an existing Core 4 auto+home bundle can cut each line 5–15% and unlock an umbrella at a better rate.

3

Take an MSF or RiderCoach course

Completing an MSF Basic RiderCourse unlocks 5–15% off a Florida motorcycle premium, waives the riding portion of the FL endorsement test, and is often required for riders under 21 anyway.

4

Use a lay-up period for seasonal RVs

If the RV is in storage 4+ months per year, a lay-up period cuts premium for those months. Common for snowbird owners who store the RV up north during summer or in Florida during trips out of state.

5

Bundle multi-bike / multi-toy

Two motorcycles, a pair of ATVs, or a motorcycle + golf cart on one policy usually saves 10–20% versus separate policies. Core 4 looks for this by default.

6

Pick the right motorhome classification

Class A, B, B+, and Super C have meaningfully different rates. A well-documented Class B Mercedes Sprinter conversion is often dramatically cheaper to insure than a same-value Class C from a major brand — Core 4 knows which carriers rate which correctly.

7

Add roadside assistance bundled, not standalone

Good Sam, Coach-Net, and FMCA memberships are often cheaper as add-ons to the base policy than purchased separately — and they use tow trucks rated for heavy RVs that standard auto roadside can't handle.

8

Classic vehicle? Switch to Hagerty

Classic motorcycles (pre-1975 Harleys, Indians), vintage RVs (Airstreams, vintage Winnebagos), and collector ATVs often price dramatically better through Hagerty's agreed-value specialty market than standard carriers.

Florida Motorcycle Insurance

Cruisers, sport bikes, touring, adventure, scooters, trikes. Progressive, Dairyland, GEICO, and specialty markets. Med-pay is critical in Florida since PIP excludes motorcycles — Core 4 adds it by default.

ATV, UTV & Side-by-Side Insurance Florida

Polaris Ranger, Can-Am Defender, Yamaha Wolverine, Kawasaki Mule, Honda Pioneer. Homeowners excludes off-premises ATV loss — dedicated policies run $200–$500/year and cover trail rides, rallies, and multi-unit families.

Quote ATV/UTV →

Golf Cart Insurance Florida

Florida has more golf-cart communities than any other state — The Villages, Sun City Center, Latitude Margaritaville. A $100–$250/year dedicated golf cart policy covers liability, collision, comprehensive, and med-pay.

Straight answers, no sales script. Still have a question? Call (954) 420-1501 — bilingual, no hold time, no charge.

Is RV insurance required in Florida? +

It depends on the RV type. Motorized RVs (Class A, B, and C motorhomes) are registered vehicles in Florida and must carry the state minimum auto liability — $10,000 PIP and $10,000 PDL — just like any Florida car.

Towable RVs (travel trailers, fifth wheels, pop-ups, toy haulers) are not self-propelled and do not require their own liability policy; coverage flows from the tow vehicle's auto policy during towing. However, lenders on financed RVs always require comprehensive and collision, and most Florida RV parks require liability coverage before renting a site.

How much is RV insurance in Florida? +

Florida RV insurance varies widely by type. A Class A motorhome typically runs $1,200 to $2,400 per year. Class B camper vans run $800 to $1,500. Class C motorhomes run $900 to $1,800. Travel trailers and fifth wheels run $300 to $700 per year. Pop-up campers and small trailers can be as low as $100 to $250.

Rates depend heavily on RV value, age, use (full-time vs seasonal), storage location, driving record, and whether the policy includes full-timer or vacation coverage.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Florida? +

Florida is unique in that it does not require motorcycle insurance to legally ride. However, if a Florida motorcyclist causes an accident, they must prove financial responsibility — meaning if they don't have liability insurance, they'll be required to post bodily injury ($10,000/$20,000) and property damage ($10,000) coverage after the fact, often through an SR-22 or bond, or lose their license.

Financed motorcycles always require full coverage. Core 4 strongly recommends voluntary liability coverage for every Florida rider — the premium is small compared to the financial exposure of an uninsured accident. And motorcycles are excluded from Florida PIP, so Med-Pay coverage is important.

What types of RVs does Core 4 insure in Florida? +

Core 4 quotes insurance for every recreational vehicle type in Florida: Class A motorhomes (the large bus-style RVs), Class B camper vans, Class C motorhomes (with over-cab sleeping area), travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, pop-up campers, teardrop trailers, horse trailers with living quarters, motorcycles (cruiser, sport, touring, trikes), ATVs, UTVs (side-by-sides), golf carts, and scooters / mopeds.

Classic and vintage RVs or motorcycles go through Hagerty with agreed-value coverage.

What is full-timer RV insurance and do I need it in Florida? +

Full-timer RV insurance is a specialty form for people who live in their RV full-time — typically six months or more per year. It combines RV coverage with homeowners-like features: personal property coverage for belongings inside the RV, personal liability when parked at a site, loss of use if the RV becomes uninhabitable, and medical payments to guests.

Full-timer coverage is significantly different from vacation or weekend-use RV policies, and getting the classification wrong can mean a denied claim. Core 4 asks about use pattern during every RV quote.

Does Florida RV insurance cover hurricane damage? +

Yes — a Florida RV insurance policy with comprehensive coverage covers hurricane wind, wind-driven rain, falling objects, hail, and flood damage to the RV from a named storm.

Some Florida RV policies apply a hurricane or named-storm deductible separately from the standard comprehensive deductible. Travel trailers and fifth wheels stored in Florida during hurricane season should have comprehensive coverage — relying on the tow vehicle's auto policy alone usually does not cover the trailer.

Do I need insurance for my ATV or UTV in Florida? +

Florida does not require insurance for ATVs, UTVs, or side-by-sides that are used only on private property. If the ATV or UTV is driven on public roads (some counties allow this) or at a public trail system, liability coverage is typically required.

Homeowners policies often exclude ATV and UTV damage once the vehicle leaves the insured's property — meaning a crash at a trail ride is uncovered without a dedicated policy. Core 4 quotes dedicated ATV and UTV policies through Progressive, Dairyland, Foremost, and specialty markets.

Can I insure my golf cart in Florida? +

Yes. Florida has more golf-cart communities than any other state — The Villages alone has tens of thousands. Homeowners policies sometimes provide limited liability for golf carts on the insured's own property, but cover nothing off-premises.

A dedicated Florida golf cart policy runs $100 to $250 a year and includes liability, collision, comprehensive, and medical payments for carts used in golf-cart communities, at courses, or on low-speed roadways. Core 4 writes golf-cart policies through specialty markets.

Does my car insurance cover my travel trailer in Florida? +

Partially. A Florida auto policy extends liability coverage to a travel trailer or fifth wheel while being towed by the insured vehicle — if the trailer causes property damage or injury during towing, the auto liability applies.

However, the auto policy does NOT cover: physical damage to the trailer itself, theft of the trailer, contents inside the trailer, or any loss while the trailer is detached and parked. A dedicated travel trailer policy is required for comprehensive and collision on the trailer.

Can Core 4 insure a classic or vintage motorcycle or RV in Florida? +

Yes — classic and vintage motorcycles and RVs are written through Hagerty (Core 4 is appointed), with agreed-value coverage, limited-use discounts, spare-parts coverage, and specialty underwriting that values condition and rarity rather than depreciation.

Hagerty writes pre-1975 motorcycles, restored Harleys and Indians, vintage Airstreams, and classic motorhomes that standard carriers won't touch.

What is roadside assistance on a Florida RV policy? +

RV roadside assistance covers on-the-road breakdowns — towing to the nearest qualified repair facility, tire changes, jump-starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and in some policies, trip interruption reimbursement if the RV is disabled more than 100 miles from home.

Specialty RV roadside (Good Sam, Coach-Net, FMCA) is often better than standard auto roadside because they send tow trucks rated for 20,000+ lb vehicles. Core 4 quotes the policy roadside and the standalone memberships and recommends the combination that fits each RV.
